The U.S. Supreme Court Needs a Code of Ethics

From the U.S. Supreme Court watchdog group Alliance for Justice, September 14, 2011, this letter: “Like most Americans, I hope that if I ever have to set foot in a courtroom, my case will be heard by a fair, impartial judge who adheres to the highest possible ethical standards. Unfortunately, our country’s highest court has never adopted the same set of ethics rules other federal judges follow.

Congressman Chris Murphy and 42 of his colleagues have called on the House Judiciary Committee to hold hearings on the need for Supreme Court ethics reform. Their letter to committee leadership noted that the alarming behavior of some justices, such as attending political events and fundraisers, “undermine the integrity of the entire judiciary, and they should not be allowed to continue.”

That’s why I’m asking you to join the call for hearings on H.R. 862, the Supreme Court Transparency and Accountability Act, which would require Supreme Court justices to follow the same ethical rules as all other federal judges, and reform the Court’s recusal process.

Supreme Court justices serve a lifetime appointment, and they’re entrusted with far-reaching authority over the lives of everyday Americans. It’s not too much to ask that these powerful judges have to follow the same rules as every other federal judge in America.”

Have you been aware that some of the current U.S. Supreme Court justices have been thumbing their noses at the citizenry of these United States of America–at you and me? No? Well…now you know!  Justices such as Samuel Alito, Anton Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and the Chief Justice himself–John Roberts–have attended political fundraisers which raise suspicions about how they can possibly sit in judgment on a case that some of these attendees at the fundraisers may have pending at some time in the future!

These fundraisers invite guests such as bank executives, pharmaceutical companies, auto manufacturers– the list is endless!  Will the justices recuse themselves if a case should be heard?  So far the female justices have not been involved in these eyebrow-raising functions. Why the males?  AND these fundraisers are for only one party!  The Republican Party.  So now what do you think about the issue?

We Americans deserve much more from our U. S. Supreme Court!  Call or e-mail your U.S. Congress Representative and urge him or her to support H.R. 862.  The House of Representatives  needs to set a code of ethics for the justices if they can’t do it for themselves.   Thank you!
