Will the Bill of Rights Survive Until 2012?

Nat Hentoff, United Media syndicated columnist, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, and author of Living the Bill of Rights (1999) wrote in Free Inquiry, the publication for the Council of  Secular Humanism August/September 2011 issue, that “our privacy rights hang by a thread as government surveillance technology advances beyond both what George Orwell could have imagined and what Bush and Cheney actually did.”

Hentoff goes on to report that “The United States is assembling a vast domestic intelligence apparatus to collect information about Americans–using the FBI, local police, state homeland security offices and military criminal investigators.”  In this last quote, Hentoff  is citing Dana Priest and William Arkind, both Washington Post reporters, in their documentary from December 10, 2010: “Monitoring America”.  There have been no street demonstrations or congressional inquiries into this flagrant violation of civil rights.  And, “Where is the ACLU?” I ask.

What’s more, President Obama has continued the Bush-Cheney practices and added more of his own–which allow “invasive collecting of links to your telephones, Internet choices, and the like,” to further quote Hentoff.  Do you frequent Facebook or engage in Tweeting?  “The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Security Agency, and other official scrutinizers are there, too,” Hentoff warns.

Hentoff concludes his excellent essay with this quote from George Santayana in his book The Life of Reason:  “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

One of my goals is to get you, the citizen, the voter, to get involved with the on goings of government–not just the politics–but recognize the magnitude of the genius of the Founders of our country in framing the Constitution.  Read the Constitution–be an informed American!  Register to vote, get involved, and vote in all elections at every opportunity at every level of  your government!  Don’t let anyone trash the Bill of Rights!  They are the security for YOUR FUTURE!
